Blue French Toasts

Food coloring or dye are chemicals used to bring color to food. These can be based of petroleum, synthetic, coal tar and FD&C. There exist: blue 1, 2, green 3, red 40, 3 and yellow 5, 6, and many others. The FDA has approved some of the dyes for food production which is labeled “FD&C”. Why manufactures use them? Because they are cheaper. There are rumors about the damages they can make to our bodies. Many researches have concluded that these dyes may cause ADHD and diseases like cancer. Besides, many people are allergic to these artificial colors. It is a petty that most of the food industries use these chemicals. Society have to be aware of this and should read the labels of everything they consume in order to have a healthier life.

My work is absolutely free of artificial colors. The fun part is to find natural ingredients that give color yo food. I use green leaves for a green colored dish, red fruits or beets for a red or fushia color. Blueberries or blackberries for a purple or blue color and oranges, tumeric and carrots when I want something yellow or orange. These Blue French Toasts are made form natural and fresh blueberries. I simply blend a handful of blueberries with water. Then, I soak the slices of bread in the blueberry juice and then, I soak them in the eggwhite mixture and cook them until done. I topped them with homemade mango jelly, almond butter, greek yogurt and more blueberries.

For the greek yogurt, I used about 1/4cup mixed with 2T of almond milk. The consistency is like a sauce.

Ingredients:                                                                                                                                                                                               yield: 1 person

1.5 slices of bread         2egg whites or 6T eggwhites      a splash of almond milk      1/2tsp vanilla (coconut essence optional)       a dash of nutmeg and cinnamon   blueberry juice

Additional: mango jelly, almond butter, blueberries and greek yogurt

Procedure:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               First, take a handful of blueberries and blend with water until juice consistency and set aside.

Then, cut the slices of bread into half and pinch them with a fork to make small holes.

Mix the eggwhites with a splash of almond milk and the spices.

Turn on a stove top on medium heat and spray coconut oil.

Now, soak the slices in the blueberry juice until colored. Then, soak them in the eggwhite mixture until damp and put them in the pan. Cook for one side during 4minutes or until firm. Flip and let cook two more minutes.
